The Guidance and Counselling Study Program of the Faculty of Education, Surabaya State University (FIP UNESA) held a Guest Lecture event which presented an international speaker, Dr. Laura Anne Winter from the University of Manchester, UK. On this occasion, Dr. Winter discussed a topic that attracts the attention of many learners in the field of counselling in Indonesia, namely "Social Justice in Counselling".
As one of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Winter introduced the concept of "Social Justice in Counselling" to the participants. In his presentation, he explained that Social Justice in Counselling is a new field that is considered as the "fifth force in Counselling" after the "four forces in counselling" that are already well known in Indonesia, namely Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Humanistic-Existential, and Multicultural.
According to Dr Winter, Social Justice in Counselling brings a new perspective to counselling practice, which places more emphasis on the implementation of a social justice systems perspective. "It broadens the scope of counselling-psychology that has been dominated by individualistic perspectives, by acknowledging the important role of social, cultural, and political systems in influencing individual well-being," he said.
The event was attended by dozens of counselling students, lecturers, and practitioners who were interested in deepening their understanding of new concepts in counselling. "Dr Laura Anne Winter's presence brings a breath of fresh air to the development of the counselling field in Indonesia. With her knowledge and experience, she managed to provide valuable insights for the participants," said Dr. Evi Winingsih, M.Pd, Coordinator of Guidance and Counselling Study Program of FIP UNESA.
Through this event, the Guidance and Counselling Study Program of FIP UNESA hopes to enrich the perspectives of guidance and counselling learners in Indonesia related to new and rapidly developing scientific fields in the western world, and help prepare a new generation of counsellors who are ready to face complex social challenges.
